While our smartphones are getting better at taking photographs, there are some limitations to its capabilities when it comes to lighting a scene as our smartphones don’t come with the same functionality as dedicated camera units. One of these examples is the ability to wirelessly trigger flash which is something professional studio photographers tend to rely on.

However this will soon change thanks to a device called Tric. Tric is basically an accessory for flash units which will also work with smartphones. All users have to do is connect their flash unit to Tric via the hotshoe, pair it with the accompanying smartphone app, and you’re good to go, so whenever you snap a photo on your phone it will help trigger the flash unit to help light up your scene.

Now it does seem like it is a very niche product and it does seem to be a very elaborate setup just so you can use your smartphone to take photos. However if you don’t have a professional camera but you know someone with lighting equipment, or maybe you have some yourself, this should do in a pinch.

Granted the photos from your phone might not necessarily be able to match those taken by a DSLR, but at least as far as lighting is concerned you’ve got that done pat. Tric is currently a Kickstarter project seeking funding to make it a reality. They are aiming for $35,000 and have so far raised a little over $1,200, so if you’d like to help out or learn more, hit up its Kickstarter page for the details.
