Twitter is making a major change to boost its messaging credentials, the company has announced that next month it’s going to remove the 140 character limit from direct messages or DMs. For those who don’t use Twitter, DMs are private messages between one or more Twitter users. This means that Twitter will no longer enforce the 140 character limit it strictly enforces for public tweets on direct messages, allowing users to exchange messages privately without having to break up a thought in multiple messages.
The microblogging platform has made it clear that this doesn’t mean a change is on the table for public posts, they will remain limited to 140 characters.
It does makes sense to remove this limit from direct messages so that users don’t look elsewhere when they want to share long messages and don’t want to go through the trouble of checking if they’ve gone over the limit.
For now DMs will adhere to the 140 character limit until next month when the change is finally put in place. The company is providing developers with ample time to update their clients accordingly.
Twitter also announced today that CEO Dick Costolo is stepping down though he will remain on the company’s board. His departure comes after years of growth struggles. Twitter co-founder and Square CEO Jack Dorsey is going to take over as interim CEO until a permanent replacement is found.
