As we’ve said before, due to the small and lightweight nature of most drones and their relative ease of operations, it can be used by photographers and videographers to capture footage from interesting vantage points that might have previously been inaccessible unless by helicopter or plane.

Now if you’re a fan of the US Open, which has been described by some as the “Super Bowl of gold”, you might be interested to learn that the sporting event will see the use of two drones which will help capture footage and offer up interesting perspectives to its viewers. This footage will be courtesy of an Austin-based company called HeliVideo.

Speaking to GeekWire, HeliVideo’s founder Eric Austin was quoted as saying, “This is the Super Bowl of golf. We’ve done some work with FOX for other golf tournaments, but not at this level.” This endeavor will see the use of DJI drones capture footage live and thanks to the utilization of a radio frequency, it will allow the footage to be intercut alongside FOX Sports’ broadcast.

The drones will be flown by an authorized and licensed pilot, while at the same time there will be a visual observer who will monitor the drones at all times. These are some of the rules put into place by the FAA, with HeliVideo being one of six companies that have actually received an exemption for flying drones at sporting events, movies, and TV show productions. In the meantime if you’d like to see what you can expect from drone footage of sporting events, check out the video above which shows footage of the Bandon Oregon golf course.
