Last year during BlizzCon, Blizzard announced the next installment in the StarCraft 2 franchise dubbed Legacy of the Void. This will essentially be the Protoss story for StarCraft 2 and it is also expected to conclude the StarCraft story. Now the game itself is a standalone as per what Blizzard said at that time, meaning that it will probably be a rather huge undertaking.

Now if you’re a fan of Blizzard’s stories and want to know what happens before the actual game, you might be interested to learn that Blizzard has announced Whispers of Oblivion. According to Blizzard, “Whispers of Oblivion is a special three-mission prologue series that has been created to bridge the storyline between Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.”

As to what these missions might entail, Blizzard states, “In Whispers of Oblivion, players will join Zeratul for the first time since Wings of Liberty to unravel the final piece of the Xel’naga prophecy.” Presumably this is to give players a taste of what’s to come and to convince them to pre-order the game if they haven’t already.

The good news is that Whispers of Oblivion will be completely free of charge to gamers even if you don’t own StarCraft 2. No word on when it will be released but Blizzard stated that it should be released ahead of Legacy of the Void. In fact if you were to pre-purchase Legacy of the Void, you will get earlier access to the prologue missions before everyone else.

In the meantime you can check out the fancy new trailer that Blizzard created just for it in the video above.
