windows_10_vrdesktopThere has been some confusion as to whether or not current Windows 10 testers will get an upgrade to Windows 10 for free. It was initially thought that was the case, but later a vaguely worded statement from Microsoft exec Gabriel Aul left users even more confused. Well for those who needed a clarification once and for all, Microsoft finally has one for you.

According to Microsoft, users who are currently part of the Windows Insider program will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. However there is a slight catch in which it basically stipulates that in order to keep your current (latest) build of Windows 10 Preview active, you will basically need to stay signed up and be part of Microsoft’s tester program for future pre-release updates.

This means that if you are using a pirated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and you think that by testing Windows 10 that you will get a free copy, that’s not really how it works. In some way by staying signed up to the Insider program, you would sort of be singing for your supper, so to speak.

That being said, users are more than welcome to opt out of being an Insider if they feel that perhaps they don’t have the time or patience to be one. These users will still be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10, assuming they have a genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 installed. According to Aul, “If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers.”
