Guild-Wars-2With MMORPG accounts actually being worth a fair bit of money, due to rare mounts, armor, weapons, and time spent accumulating them, it isn’t surprising that you hear about accounts being hacked and having their items stolen from them. There are various ways to protect your account, depending on the game.

Now if you’re a Guild Wars 2 player looking to protect their account, you might be interested to learn that ArenaNet will be introducing an SMS verification system this summer. Basically this is like a two-step authentication security system to ensure that even if your account’s username and password has been discovered, they still won’t be able to get in until you verify who you are via the SMS.

According to Mike O’Brien from ArenaNet, “Once you associate a phone number with your account, if someone tries to log in to your account from a new location, we’ll send an SMS to your cell phone or call your landline to verify that it’s you.” In a time when accounts and websites are being hacked on a more frequent basis, having this extra layer of protection will no doubt be a welcome feature.

However like we said the feature isn’t live yet but it is expected to this summer, so if you’re really particular about the security of your Guild Wars 2 account then you’ll want to keep an eye out for this when it is rolled out.
