facebook-audience-networkIs the music streaming market getting a little crowded? We’re starting to think so, what with Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, Tidal, and etc., all of whom are fighting one another for a larger slice of the pie. However could Facebook be considering making their entrance as well? According to a report from The Verge, it certainly seems that way.

The Verge is reporting that according to their sources, Facebook is apparently in talks with the major music labels. This usually happens if a company is trying to license the songs owned by these labels, which is what companies such as Apple, Spotify, and Tidal have done before they were allowed to legally stream music.

However given that Facebook has not shown any signs of being interested in entering the music business, it does seem odd that they would be talking to these labels, assuming of course the information is accurate to begin with. It has been suggested that this could get users to stay on their site longer, which also means that more ads can be served or sold at a higher price.

The Verge’s sources also note that the talks are still in their early stages and nothing has been decided yet, but assuming there is a direction to be headed, it will be an interesting one. As expected, Facebook and the major labels involved – Sony, Warner, and Universal – have declined to comment on the rumors.
