instagram-redesign-1Instagram is meant to be consumed on a mobile device, such as your smartphone, and because of that, photos displayed by the app tend to be pretty small. In fact its resolution is set at 640px which is definitely nowhere near what our smartphone displays are capable of these days.

However it seems that Instagram has recently decided to increase the size of the photos displayed. This is according to a report from The Verge who claims that photos uploaded onto Instagram are now of the 1080px resolution. It should be noted that the new resolution isn’t available to everyone just yet.

Instead the 1080px photos were discovered in the source code of Instagram’s webview, but it also appears that some users are seeing it as well in previews, but like we said it does not appear to have rolled out to all users just yet. What does this mean for Instagram users? Well photos in higher resolution crammed into smaller displays tends to result in slightly sharper images.

This means that your Instagram experience should be improved, which is great if you’re a photographer who uses Instagram for their portfolio, or maybe you just want to see higher quality photos, either way we suppose this is something worth looking forward to.
