mitro-password-manager

There’s bad news for you if you heavily rely upon a password manager called Mitro, it’s going to be shut down next month. Twitter acquired Mitro last year and has now decided to shut down this password manager for groups and individuals. There’s over a month to go till it bites the dust so users at least have some time on their hands to find a capable replacement before they’re unable to use Mitro any more.

From July 18th no new accounts will be created and Mitro is already allowing all users to export their data. All account data will be deleted on September 13th.

In a new page on its website the company said that it had been maintaining the service on its own time and with its own money but now the cost and administrative burden has become too much. “We do not have time to properly manage a service that people rely on for their security. As a result, we need to stop running it.”

Mitro recommends that users switch to other similar services which include the likes of LastPass and 1Password, if this shutdown causes “extreme hardship” users can keep the service going if they pay $200 per month and email ej@evanjones.ca for more information, but the team says it’s extremely unlikely at this point that they’ll extend the life of this service any further beyond August 31st.
