It has been a while since Apple updated its iPod lineup, amid rumors that it might axe the iPod touch entirely the company today announced a new iPod touch as well as a small change for the iPod nano and iPod shuffle. The new iPod touch gets powerful specifications and it will also be available in several new colors. Apple has kept the design and dimensions same across the entire lineup so don’t expect any radical changes on that front.

The new iPod touch has an A8 processor which is the very same one that you’ll find inside the iPhone 6, this CPU is six times faster than the one in the previous iPod touch and 10 times faster in graphics performance, so the company claims.

It also gets support for Metal which means the iPod touch can now run powerful games, there’s support for the M8 motion co-processor as well which tracks health and fitness related data for relevant applications.

Display remains the same at 4 inches and there’s no bump in the resolution or anything, the new iPod touch does get an 8 megapixel camera with an improved image sensor processor as well as burst and slo-mo modes.

Also onboard is cinematic video stabilization while the front facing camera remains the same as the previous generation but does get a updated sensor and burst mode. Support for the fast AC Wi-Fi standard is also present.

The new iPod touch will cost $199, $249, $299 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. For the first time a 128GB model will also be sold for $399, all models will be available in space gray, silver, gold, pink, red and blue colors.

Apple has not made any significant changes to the iPod nano and iPod shuffle, these two models will now also be available in the aforementioned colors. They’re all available for purchase starting today.
