Samsung-Gear-S-11

Samsung confirmed today that it’s going to conduct an Unpacked event on August 13th and while it hasn’t said anything about what’s going to be on the agenda, it’s a pretty good bet that the company will formally launch Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. Previous reports suggest that a new smartwatch might be thrown in the mix as well, and a report today says that a limited scale launch of Samsung Pay might also be announced during the event.

Back in March this year when the Galaxy S6 was announced Samsung introduced a new payments service called Samsung Pay. It has already been put through a beta trial and is now being awaited in launch markets which include South Korea and the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that a limited version of Samsung Pay could be launched on August 13th alongside the new handsets and the new smartwatch before Samsung goes ahead with a full roll out later this year.

At launch Samsung Pay users may only be allowed to pay for public transport rides until the full roll out after which they will be able to use the new payments service to pay for purchases in-store.

Once the service is live in the launch markets Samsung is expected to expand it to Europe and China. Samsung has not officially confirmed its plans for Samsung Pay yet but it’s quite likely that we’ll hear something about it at the event next month.
