hiroki totokiWhen it comes to smartphones, Sony makes some pretty decent handsets, especially in the camera department which is where Sony’s flagships typically shine. However the company’s market share is a pittance when compared to the likes of companies such as Apple, Samsung, and even Xiaomi.

So much so that previously we had heard rumors that Sony was planning to exit the smartphone business by selling off its assets. Now if you were a fan of Sony’s handsets and are a little worried about the company’s future, fret not because Sony has reiterated its commitment to their smartphone business.

Speaking to Arabian Business (via Xperia Blog) in an interview, Sony Mobile CEO and President Hiroki Totoki was quoted as saying, “We’re heading to the IoT (Internet of Things) era and have to produce a number of new categories of products in this world, otherwise we could lose out on a very important business domain. In that sense we will never ever sell or exit from the current mobile business.”

Totoki also said that the selling off of their VAIO PC division was what led to speculation that Sony could sell their smartphone division, along with a huge loss the company experienced in 2014 which according to Totoki, was due to a write-off of the goodwill of their impairment asset. He maintains that Sony is still enjoying a healthy cashflow.

In the meantime there have been rumors that Sony is planning a second flagship for 2015 in the form of the Xperia Z5 that will apparently launch with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and will arrive in the next couple of months.
