It is said that there are approximately 360 million people around the world that suffer from hearing loss, at least to the World Health Organisation (WHO), and I am quite sure that WHO has done their homework in order to come up with such a figure. Not only that, there is limited access to hearing aid technology worldwide since not everyone is able to afford such technology, especially when many of them happen to live in poorer areas. A bunch of engineering students in Argentina might be on to something here, having developed a hearing tool which will operate through a smartphone app that they have dubbed uSound .

The uSound app will be able to capture ambient sound, before it works to make adjustments to the frequencies, while adapting them to the users’ specific hearing difficulties or capabilities. In other words, they are trying to help the hard of hearing to hear again. Dr.Victorio Stok is particular enthusiastic concerning the uSound app, saying, “I don’t just think it works, I can confirm it works. We are already using it with our patients. We try the device out on a patient and the patient will be able to answer. The patient’s hearing is then examined without the uSound device and then given the same test with the app and the changes the patients undergo are striking.”

Users will first need to load their auditory test results – and these results will then be measured by a professional. The app then proceeds to optimize the sound before tailoring it to the patient’s needs. A customized solution for every user, if you will.
