When it comes to strapping your kids in the car, this usually involves the use of a specially-designed car seat placed in the backseat of your car/minivan. For the most part this seems to be the safest and most accepted way of strapping your kid in, however Volvo believes that this is a system that can be improved upon.

The company has recently debuted a concept in Sweden called the Excellence Child Seat. What this does is that it rethinks how a car’s interior layout is designed. Basically instead of placing your child at the backseat where it might be hard for you or your spouse to keep an eye on them, the concept reimagines the child seat being placed in the front passenger seat, with the seat turned back facing the passenger sitting behind.

This allows a parent, sibling, or helper to keep an eye on the child, maybe feed him/her, or entertain them while the driver focuses on the road. According to Volvo, this setup is also supposedly safer due to the way the seat is positioned, meaning that in the event of a crash, the child won’t be thrown face forward.

Instead the seat will be used to help protect the neck and spine of the child, giving them a better chance of escaping unscathed. That being said as good as an idea this is, it is currently a concept meaning there’s no telling if and when Volvo will be making it a reality.
