It has been two years since Microsoft launched the Xbox One and leading up to the launch in 2013 the company frequently pointed Xbox One’s TV cable box features which rival PlayStation 4 lacks. Things didn’t quite turn out the way Microsoft would have wanted because gaming was still the big draw for customers and they significantly opted for the PS4 instead. Since then the company has shifted course and increase the console’s focus on gaming and while it continues to grow those features, Xbox boss Phil Spence doesn’t see  “much value” in the cable box features.

In an interview with The Verge, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that while Xbox One owners are spending as much time using the entertainment features as they do on gaming, the company is taking a slightly different approach to this matter than it did at launch.

Spencer elaborates that Microsoft has been “thinking a lot” about over-the-air and over-the-top content that people seem to be quickly moving towards these days. “Whether I think I’m going to become an additive thing to your cable box… I’m not sure we have as much value to add there in the long run where I think about where the space is going,” he added.

This still doesn’t settle the matter of DVR functionality for Xbox One which would allow users to record TV shows using the console. Spencer didn’t rule it out, instead he teased that there are “natural features” we could see where the Xbox One could do a good job particularly at a time when users rely upon multiple video sources.

Gamescom is scheduled for early next month and Microsoft is likely going to make some announcements there, perhaps the DVR feature might be one of them.
