runtasticWhen it comes to fitness apps, it’s actually a bit odd that makers of fitness clothing and shoes aren’t the companies behind such apps since you would think it’s their forte. However slowly we’ve started to see these companies start to make their presence felt in the mobile fitness community, like with Nike launching their Nike+ running app and Under Armour acquiring the likes of MyFitnessPal and Endomondo.

Now it looks like Adidas wants in on the action too as it has been officially announced that the sports company will be acquiring fitness app developer Runtastic. For those unfamiliar with Runtastic, the company makes a variety of fitness-related apps. This includes the Runtastic app itself which runners use to measure distance, pace, time, calories burnt, and etc. They have also designed apps for road bikes and mountain bikes, just to name a few.

According to a post on Runtastic’s blog by the company’s co-founder and CEO Florian Gschwandtner, “At Runtastic, we already have a lot of knowledge when it comes to apps and digital technology – and with adidas Group as our trusted counterpart (and one of the most successful and most comprehensive sports companies in the world) there’s nothing we won’t be able to do when it comes to health & fitness offerings.”

That being said the good news is that for now, Adidas will not be making any changes to the way Runtastic works. The company will still be keeping its apps alive and well and in fact they have a new one planned for the end of the year. We expect that in the coming months or years Adidas will find some use for them but for now, it’s business as usual.
