photo sharing patentHow often have you taken photos of your friends and family members at gatherings, only to have all of them come up to you and say, “Don’t forget to send that to me!” There are several ways around this, which is to either send it one by one through personal messages, or send out an email blast with the photos attached and let everyone sort it out themselves.

There is a third way and that way is through an automated process that relies on facial recognition. Unfortunately this isn’t a feature that is available yet as it only exists as a patent discovered by the folks at AppleInsider. However it does sound like a nifty feature that we’re sure many wouldn’t mind seeing in their devices in the future.

How does it work? Basically through the use of facial recognition, the software will determine who is in the photo and if you have them in your contacts. If you do, it will then be able to send said photo to the people it has recognized and who are in your contacts. This means that instead of sending out a flood of photos that might not be relevant, you can send photos of that person to that person only.

The patent also describes how the system will be able to “learn” and teach itself new faces over time, thus allowing users to build up a database for future sharing purposes. However like we said this is a patent and there’s no telling if and when Apple will ever make it a reality.
