If you were to fire up the original Diablo from back in the day, safe to say that the progression in terms of graphics quality from then to Diablo 3 will be pretty glaring. However sometimes it isn’t about the graphics that makes a game great, and we’re sure many Diablo fans can attest to that, and now it looks like someone has decided to remake the original.

According to a recent post on Reddit (via Kotaku) by someone calling themselves wheybags, a game called “Freeablo” has been announced. However as wheybags notes. “Freeablo is a modern cross platform reimplementation of the game engine used in Diablo 1. As it is just an engine, you will need the original data files to play the game.”

What this means is that this isn’t the full version of the game, but rather parts of it which he/she is still working on. The post also mentions contributors are welcome. The official website also seems to confirm the game’s somewhat barebones status but with the next update, wheybags is hoping to add combat and multiplayer aspects to the game.

It sounds like quite an undertaking but we have to wonder how Blizzard feels about this. While Blizzard has fiercely protected their IPs in the past, such as pursuing legal action against bot makers, they have also thrown their support behind fanmade projects, like a StarCraft MMO made from a couple of years ago, so it’s hard to say if Blizzard will want to support this 100% or shut it down.
