drifterSpeakers generally need to be connected to a media source in order for it to play audio. This can be done via wired connection using an audio cable, or it can be a wireless connection where it can connect via Bluetooth, AirPlay, NFC, and other means, but basically at the end of the day it needs to connect to something.

However the folks at Freedom Audio felt that this was a bit unnecessary which has since led to the creation of Drifter. Drifter is a set of speakers that runs its own operating system. This means that it can store its own music and play it back through the speakers without need an external device like a smartphone or a computer.

It runs on Android and will also play nicely with a host of music streaming services such as Spotify, Beats, and Apple Music, just to name a few. It also comes with 16GB of storage so if you’d rather not stream, you can always keep your songs on the speaker. Alternatively if you’d rather stream music to the speakers from an external device, it will also be able to connect to WiFi and Bluetooth.

Drifter does not come cheap as it is priced at $199, but if you think the built-in storage is a feature too invaluable to pass up, then you can head on over to its website and pre-order your unit. We should note that upon release the speakers are expected to be priced at $299, so you might want to move fast to take advantage of this deal.
