ff14-unbanThere are plenty of MMORPGs around at the moment, but it’s safe to say that Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is one of the top games that many developers try to beat, and it seems that Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV is coming pretty close. Square Enix has recently announced that the number of player accounts registered with the game has crossed the 5 million mark.

This is a nice jump from the 1.5 million registered users we saw in 2013. However it should be noted that these are registered accounts, meaning that you could easily register just as many for yourself and it would be counted towards that 5 million. This is versus World of Warcraft which has 5.6 million subscriptions last we checked, meaning that these are 5.6 million accounts that are actively paying for the game, although we wouldn’t be surprised if there are gamers who have more than one paid account with the game.

That being said, 5 million registered accounts is still a pretty impressive feat, although we suppose this is largely thanks to the loyal Final Fantasy fanbase, not to mention the amount of work that went into the remake of the MMORPG whose previous iteration was less than successful.

So far reviews of the revamped MMORPG have been largely positive but whether or not it will catchup to or surpass Blizzard’s World of Warcraft remains to be seen, especially with Blizzard’s recent announcement of the expansion that will no doubt be able to pull in new and old players into the game.
