Google has pushed out an update to the Google Maps for iOS app and it brings a new feature called Night Mode, as the name suggests this feature makes it very easy for users to navigate using the app when it’s dark outside. Night Mode will reduce many of the risks associated with using the app behind the wheel particularly when it’s dark outside, not that it’s good judgement to use your smartphone behind the wheel, but we’ve all done this at some point in our lives.

Switching on Night Mode will instantly apply a darker theme throughout the app, users will notice the change immediately since their eyes won’t have to adjust between the dark road and the smartphone’s glaring white screen.

In theory this is going to make navigation using Google Maps at night much safer, but if you’re using the smartphone behind the wheel and not paying attention to the road you could end up in even more trouble.

That’s one of the reasons why my drivers use stands or mounts to place their smartphones in a manner that doesn’t require them to be distracted while still being able to navigate using the app. Night Mode just went live for the iOS app, it has already been available for the Android app.

Google Maps for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store.
