If you’ve been following news coming out of Gamescom today you’ll be aware that Microsoft has made some impressive announcements today. Towards the end of its Gamescom 2015 keynote Microsoft made a surprise announcement: Halo Wars 2 is going to be released in 2016. The sequel to this popular strategy spin-off is under development and is slated for release in the coming year. Halo Wars 2 will be exclusive to Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.

The Creative Assembly, a studio that’s well known for its strategy games, is developing Halo Wars 2. Like the prequel this new title will be a real-time strategy game which will offer a different gameplay from the main Halo series.

Microsoft didn’t go into many details about Halo Wars 2 but it did publish a debut trailer to provide us with an idea of what the story and setting is going to be.

The company has been working the Halo machine to make it an even bigger phenomenon, it has already launched a live action series from Ridley Scott earlier this year and in a couple of months it will launch the much awaited Halo 5: Guardians title.

In a bid to further promote the Halo brand Microsoft has also developed a limited edition Halo 5 themed Xbox One and it will also conduct a new e-sports tournament with a hefty prize pool. Halo Wars 2 will add to these efforts, for now we can only wait and see if it lives up to expectations when it arrives next year.
