Burger King used social media to call for a one-day truce with McDonald’s yesterday, it published an open letter to Ronald McDonald’s outfit suggesting that the two companies put all rivalries aside from one day to encourage world peace. BK suggested that they create the McWhopper that combines “all the tastiest bits of your Big Mac and our Whopper” in one delectable “peace-loving” burger. McDonald’s has responded: it’s not interested.

The aim behind this proposal for McDonald’s was to get the world talking about September 21st, Peace Day, and see the hybrid burger at a pop-up store somewhere in Atlanta because that’s the mid-point between the two companies HQ’s. All proceeds would have gone to the Peace One Day charity.

As much as I was hoping to see the McWhopper turn into reality McDonald’s has shot down the offer. The company’s CEO Steve Easterbrook took to McDonald’s Facebook page to share the news, while he calls the initiative a “good idea,” he says that their two brands can do something bigger to make a difference.

He goes on to remind Burger King that the two have a “friendly business competition” which doesn’t have the “unequaled circumstances of the real pain and suffering of war,” this was in response to BK’s suggestion of ending their “burger wars” for one day.

Looks like golden arches is taking the moral high ground here, but you have to admit though, it would have been nice to see the two come together for one day and raise awareness and funds for a good cause.
