Microsoft Research is working on a new project which will allow you to create high-quality 3D images in real time, you don’t require any expensive gadgets to do this, the project is focused on making this happen with regular smartphones. The aim is to allow users to create 3D images as easily as they would take a picture or record a video with their handsets.

This system effectively enables users to take something that’s similar to a picture but instead it’s a full 3D object, explains Peter Ondruska, a Ph.D. candidate at Oxford University who worked on this project during his internship at Microsoft Research.

The researchers call this system MobileFusion and say that it’s better than other methods for 3D scanning primarily because it doesn’t require any other hardware or even an internet connection for that matter.

Scans taken with MobileFusion are high-quality enough that they can be used for augmented reality video games as well as 3D printing. The researchers came up with an algorithm which basically allows a regular smartphone’s camera to double as a 3D scanner by taking multiple images, a technique not too different from how the human eye works.

The researchers will present MobileFusion at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality in October this year, they hope to eventually release it to the general public at some point in the future.
