super mario bros movieWe’re not sure if you guys have seen the Super Mario Bros. movie that was released in 1993, but the general consensus is that it was a terrible, terrible movie based on a much beloved franchise. Unfortunately that seems to be the way of video games-cum-movies these days, but it seems that Nintendo is not giving up just yet.

Speaking to Fortune, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the company was once again open to the idea of allowing their video games to be made into movies. According to Miyamoto, “As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that—and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future.”

If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it is because earlier this year the data from the Sony Pictures hack was posted online, and part of that data dump revealed that Sony execs were in talks with Nintendo about a possible new Mario movie, or at least that was what was inferred based on the leaked email conversations.

Like we said, video games that are made into movies rarely turn out well. In fact even the latest effort, Hitman: Agent 47 which is based on the Hitman video game franchise, proved to be a disaster where it has been given a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews of it being largely negative, but we doubt that will deter many studios from trying their hand at it anyway.
