oxford-new-wordsIt looks like it is that time of the year again, where the Oxford dictionary will be updated in order to remain relevant with the times. Back in 2013, we saw the inclusion of phablet, bitcoin and twerk, among others, and this time around, what are some of the latest additions that will make an appearance in the tome of knowledge? The likes of awesomesauce, butt dial, manspreading, and mic drop have wound their way to the online dictionary.

This is part of Oxford University Press’ quarterly update when it comes to words being added to the online dictionary, and as you can tell from the above, it happens to be a bunch of contemporary slang terms that are slowly but surely making the transition to institutionalized language. Of course, the likes of wine’o clock, manic pixie dream girl, snackable and Redditor have also made the cut.

Angus Stevenson, head of content development at Oxford Dictionaries, shared, “New words, senses, and phrases are added to OxfordDictionaries.com when we have gathered enough independent evidence from a wide range of sources to be sure that they have widespread currency in the English language. This quarter’s update shows that contemporary culture continues to have an undeniable and fascinating impact on the language.”
