Dropbox has announced today that it’s rolling out a new security feature for all users that’s going to make their experience with the cloud storage service much more safer, Dropbox is adding Universal 2nd Factor security keys as an additional method for two-step verification. What this means is that users will be able to use USB keys for two-factor login on Dropbox.

Security keys are a much easier way of using two-step verification when signing in dropbox.com, once you’ve typed in your password insert the key in the USB port when prompted instead of entering the six digit code.

This is different from two-factor login with a phone since you don’t have to worry about the battery dying out when you opt for the USB security key instead.

They also provided greater protection against theft attacks like phishing, they’re designed to protect against such attacks since cryptographic communication ensures that it only works when the user is signing into the legitimate Dropbox website.

To set this method of two-factor login up you’ll require a USB security key that follows FIDO Alliance’s open standard called FIDO Universal 2nd Factor, it can then be set up with the Dropbox account as well as similar U2F-enabled services like Google.
