Microsoft-Lumia-640-XL-06

Now that Windows 10 has been released for computers we’re waiting on Microsoft to roll out the latest iteration of its operating system to smartphones as well. The company has said in the past that it will release Windows 10 Mobile over the fall but no confirmed date has been provided yet.

It appears that when the software does arrive it won’t be available for Windows Phone 8.1 devices that have less than 8GB of onboard storage. All devices that can run Windows Phone 8.1 will be compatible with Windows 10 Mobile, however the German version of Windows 10 Mobile’s website states that WP8.1 handsets with less than 8GB of internal storage won’t receive this update.

It’s interesting to note that other country-specific versions of the website don’t offer this information so either the Germans made an error or the others just haven’t updated their websites yet.

The possibility does exist though considering the fact that Windows Phone 8.1 powered smartphones with under 8GB storage were not treated to public preview builds of Windows 10 Mobile, that same strategy could follow through to the final public release as well.

There aren’t a lot of WP8.1 handsets that do feature less than 8GB of storage, only a handful of devices like the Lumia 540, HTC One 8S, Blu Win JR and others from less popular OEMs fall in this category. The rest are okay and will get the update in due time.
