At Gamescom Microsoft confirmed that a feature will be making its way to the Xbox One soon that had already been rumored multiple times and happened to be one that fans were anxiously waiting for. The Xbox One DVR feature will go live next year but don’t expect to be able to save over-the-air live TV to the internal hard drive, as it turns out to use this feature for recording live TV you’ll need to hook up an external hard drive.

During a presentation concerning redesign of the Xbox One dashboard project lead Richard Irving confirmed that the DVR function isn’t going to record live TV to the Xbox One’s internal hard drive.

He said that since Microsoft wants to keep the storage paths optimized between playing games and watching TV users are required to hook up an external hard drive to their console if they want to record shows being aired on over-the-air TV networks.

If Xbox One owners decide they want to record live TV using their console they’ll first have to purchase two items: the digital TV tuner which has already been out for a couple of months now as well as an external hard drive. The capacity of that hard drive obviously dictates how many shows the user can store.

Those who are looking to purchase an external hard drive for this requirement or to expand the Xbox One’s storage can go with the Game Drive, a 2TB hard drive developed by Seagate in collaboration with Microsoft though it’s not like there are no cheaper options to be had.
