Homebrew developer and hacker Jordan “Smealum” Rabet has finally exposed the YouTube exploit which can be used to launch homebrew games on the Nintendo 3DS. The possibility of homebrew being run on the Nintendo 3DS has excited many people who own this handheld and now the hacker is finally exposing the method with which all of this can be done.
The YouTube app is available for free and it’s still live on the 3DS eShop, it remains to be seen though for how long this app remains up. Rabet previously exposed an exploit to run homebrew apps through IronFall: Invasion which was also free on the eShop but was quickly pulled.
He has posted a video on YouTube which shows the homebrew launcher up and running on the 3DS, Rabet reiterates that “this launcher does not in any way let users run pirated 3DS software.”
The exploit is called TubeHax and it lets users run out-of-region gamecards as well as use SNES ROMs through an emulator and apply custom themes to the handheld’s home menu.
Nintendo usually patches such exploits through a firmware update so keep an eye out for one if you intend on using this exploit to run homebrew on the 3DS, updating the firmware will mean that you lose access for good, until an alternative is found.
