Amazon takes a slightly different route to decide which original series it should make, it runs pilot seasons in which it releases almost a dozen or so pilots which users can see for free and vote on. Based on their votes Amazon then decides which pilot should be developed into a proper series. This strategy has proven to work for the company which came up with award winning series like Transparent, Amazon today announced that fall’s pilot season will feature six new pilots.

Considering the fact that in the past Amazon’s pilot seasons have played host to as many as a dozen new pilots the upcoming six seem like a step down, but the company makes up for it by working with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Industry veterans like Nicole Holofcener, Sacha Baron Cohen, Louis CK and others will feature in half-hour pilots whereas Shane Black, the man who directed Iron Man 2, is going to develop and direct Edge, a post Civil War drama that will be an hour long.

Amazon doesn’t guarantee which pilots will be picked up for the entire season, it allows viewers to watch the pilots and then provide their feedback which is then considered before a decision is made whether or not a particular pilot should be picked up.

The company hasn’t confirmed yet when these new pilots will be released but does say that we should expected them later this year, perhaps a couple of months from now.
