How 3D printers work is kind of like how normal printers work. There is the material used to print which is equivalent to the ink in regular printers, and from there based on your design, it will then release that material and layer it until it becomes the thing you wanted to print. So instead of ink, you might end up using plastic, metal, or even food as its source.

However Glowforge has an entirely different approach to 3D printing. Instead of layering, the method we mentioned earlier, Glowforge’s printer will use lasers and basically cut out designs based on whatever you have input into the software. For example you could place a piece of wood in Glowforge and have it cut out a design that you have specified.

It can also be used with a variety of materials, so if you’re looking to design your own rubber stamps, badges, and so on, this might be useful. According to the company, they are boasting that its laser cutting technology is more precise than other similar machines out there, and best of all it is affordable.

Similar devices could cost as much as $5,000, or even more if you plan on going industrial, but Glowforge’s 3D laser printer will only set you back $1,995 if you were to pre-order it. Granted it’s still not exactly “cheap”, but if you have a business this is a reasonably-sized investment. If you’d like to see it in action, check it out in the video above and if you like what you see, head on over to Glowforge’s website for the details.
