horseWe are all about going green in this day and age, so when it comes to hearing that there is a HORSE in the vicinity that might reinvent the food cycle, we are all ears. Food waste is a massive, worldwide problem that needs to be tackled, and while composting is a great idea, it will require the following – time, space, and infrastructure in order to be well supported. This is where the HORSE (High-solids Organic-waste Recycling System with Electrical Output) device comes in.

HORSE is being developed by Impact Bioenergy at the moment, where it functions as a portable anaerobic digestion system which is capable of taking in a wide range of organic waste materials. This means you can throw in kitchen scraps, yard waste, and even paper products in order to come up with both liquid fertilizer and energy, through the guises of biogas and electricity.

Imagine having a single HORSE in each neighborhood or community – it might spell the end of the curbside garbage pickup system, and at the same time, avoid the carbon emissions which is normally associated with that form of waste management. Individually, each HORSE unit is said to be able to convert 25 tons per year of organic waste into approximately 5400 gallons of liquid fertilizer, as well as up to 37 MWh (megawatt-hours) of energy, now how about that for efficiency?
