the last of usLast week during a livestream, it seems that one of Naughty Dog’s writers accidentally let slip that the studio was working on a sequel to The Last of Us, which we can only assume will be known as The Last of Us 2. According what was said at that time, “All the facial animation in the Uncharted series was led up by Eric, here, and [on] the first The Last of Us. Uh, did I say the first The Last of Us?”

So what does this mean? Does this essentially confirm that Naughty Dog is working on a sequel to The Last of Us? It turns out that they sort of are. Speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar), the game’s creative director Neil Druckmann basically came forward and addressed the rumors and earlier speculation put forth by voice actor Nolan North.

According to Druckmann, “When Bruce [Straley, game director] and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”

Basically what this sounds like is that at the most, Naughty Dog has an idea of what they want to make with The Last of Us 2, but in terms of development, nothing has been done yet as they are still working on Uncharted 4, but it’s good to know that the project is at the very least alive and well.
