spotify_mix_matesWhile we all love different genres of music, there is probably a band or an artist that you and your friend might agree upon. For example you might be a metalhead and your friend loves EDM, but you both agree that Taylor Swift is awesome, so how does one craft a playlist based on that shared interest?

Spotify wants to help as the company has recently launched a new feature called Mix Mates. Basically how Mix Mates work is by you picking an artist that you like, and picking one that your friend likes, and based on Spotify’s algorithm, they will then attempt to create a playlist that they think both of you will enjoy.

Of course whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but we suppose at the very least Mix Mates will be able to find some kind of middle ground where there might be some songs that both of you guys can agree upon. For example in my testing I put the bands Limp Bizkit and Fourplay.

The end result was a playlist that seemed to start off heavy, but tapers out and transitions into jazzy songs towards the end. It’s an interesting mix and depending on how different your favorite genres are from your friend’s, your playlist might not be as varied.
