Not too long ago the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released, the little robots that featured in the trailer caught many fans attention most of whom though that the tiny robots looked quite similar to a giant Sphero robot with a little floating head. Orbotix was then asked if it would create a version of this popular Sphero robot that would look just the same as the one in the trailer. It’s already making the big one being used in the movie and now the company has developed a small version of that as well.

BB-8 By Sphero looks quite similar to a Sphero robot with a tiny head but it’s actually capable of doing much more than just looking pretty. It can hook up to a smartphone or tablet so that users can control the movement, and it supports the same kinds of movements seen in the big robot from the movie.

The companion app provides multiple control methods including voice control, the robot also features a sentry mode and has autonomous behavior when you just want it to roll around on its own.

Sphero says that BB-8 has an adaptive personality so the more you interact with it the more its behavior will change. It comes with a wireless docking cradle to store the robot it and charge it when it’s not in use, the cradle itself is heavy on Star Wars theming.

BB-8 by Sphero will be launched on Force Friday, that’s September 4th, and it will be available from Sphero’s website for $149.
