In the past we have talked about how drones could be used for more than just photography or videography, at least on a consumer level. In fact there has been ideas tossed out in the past that suggests that drones could one day be used as personal transportation devices, and it looks on YouTube, one user decided to put that to the test.

In the video above, YouTuber Gasturbine101 basically cobbled together a swarm of drones and created some kind of super drone swarm where their combined efforts actually managed to lift him up into the sky for a brief moment. Of course this contraption won’t be letting him fly over houses.

Based on what we see, it seems that it can only hover above ground for a few feet, but even then we have to admit it is pretty impressive for a DIY effort. According to its creator, the Swarm will last for about 10 minutes thanks to its collective battery packs. It’s not very long, but we have to admit that it looks pretty cool and it would seem like a fun ride.

This is actually a more refined version of the Swarm. Prior to this, Gasturbine101 posted a video where the drones were controlled remotely, but in the latest video it seems that he has moved the controls to inside the drones themselves, allowing him to control its flight on board. We don’t suggest that you try this at home as it does seem a bit dangerous, but in the meantime perhaps watching his efforts will be good enough.
