Even in this day and age when translation services literally sit on our wrists the language barrier still exists and it happens to be one of the most troubling things for some people traveling in a foreign land, others might not think too much about it but some would always prefer dealing with a local that knows how to speak English. Ridesharing service Uber is well aware of this which is why it’s launched a new service called UberENGLISH in Colombia which ensures that the driver you pick is a certified English-speaking one.

Initially this service will only be available in Colombia, users will be able to request an English-speaking driver. Uber says over 1,000 drivers have already opted for this certification which is also going to allow them to earn more money from driving passengers that would rather have a driver who speaks the global language.

Uber has linked up with Duolingo for this service, Duolingo already provides language lessons through its app and it will certify drivers for Uber using its existing Test Center which conducts these tests through remote monitoring.

A certification test usually costs $20 but Uber is going to cover it for drivers if they place out through preliminary testing or go through enough training to get themselves certified.

The possibility exists that UberENGLISH may be expanded to other parts of the world, perhaps one day Uber users all across the globe won’t have to worry about trying to communicate with their driver in a language they don’t know.
