VLC is perhaps the most popular video player out there that’s available on a wide variety of platforms, though it has never been officially released for Apple TV. The set-top box didn’t come with an App Store previously through which developers could distribute their apps but that changes with the new Apple TV that significantly relies upon apps to provide a much better experience. This has paved the way for VLC to land on the Apple TV.

This isn’t the only popular media app that’s making its way to the Apple TV. Plex has also confirmed that it’s working on an app as well which could be released in the near future.

VideoLAN lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf confirmed through his blog today that the team is working on an official app for Apple TV, though what they have right now is in early stages but it does support video playback.

This means that even though the new Apple TV comes out next month it might take some time before VLC is ready to be released for the set-top box, but at least now we know it’s going to come sooner or later.

VLC is already available on Apple TV rivals such as Android TV and Amazon Fire TV, many folks who pick up the new Apple TV will certainly appreciate having VLC on their set-top box.
