amazon-smart-glassesAmazon is a company known as a retailer first and foremost, however they do make products like e-book readers as well as tablets and smartphones, although the latter isn’t doing that well. Interestingly enough it seems that Amazon might also be interested in augmented reality technology, thanks to a recently discovered patent.

According to the patent which was filed for back in 2013, it describes a pair of glasses and features that sounds like it could be augmented reality-related. Basically the glasses will work in conjunction with a tablet or smartphone where the contents of the mobile device can be projected onto the glasses and in front of the viewer.

The glasses will be able to switch transparency meaning that you can turn the display on or off and use it as a regular pair of glasses without having to take them off and on your face. We’re not sure if besides display images on the glasses that it can do anything else. This would be slightly different from the likes of the HoloLens where users can actually interact with what’s in front of them.

At the very least we suppose these could be called smart glasses, similar to what the first iteration of Google Glass offered. In any case given that this is a patent from 2 years ago, we suppose it’s safe to say that it never made the cut and transition to an actual product, but who knows perhaps Amazon might turn it into an actual thing one day.
