Google-Chrome-Pixel-C-26Yesterday there was a very interesting rumor that suggested that Google might be merging Chrome OS and Android into a single platform. Does a unified platform make sense? In some ways it does, especially when you look at what Microsoft is doing with Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile.

Apple might disagree but that’s a debate for another date. So are the rumors real? Taking to Twitter, Google’s SVP of Android, Chromecast, and Chrome OS Hiroshi Lockheimer made a statement which sort of seems to debunk the rumors. According to Lockheimer, “There’s a ton of momentum for Chromebooks and we are very committed to Chrome OS. I just bought two for my kids for schoolwork!”

Note that Lockheimer does not explicitly state that the rumors are false, but rather that Google continues to remain committed to Chrome OS. It could be interpreted to mean that should the merger of Chrome OS and Android be real, Google will not focus more on one aspect and neglect the features of Chrome OS.

Also the rumor from yesterday did not mention anything about Google killing off Chromebooks either. The new platform is said to be capable of running on computers and smartphones, so in essence you could think of it as a major overhaul of Chrome OS. Of course this is just speculation for now but what do you guys think? Is Lockheimer’s statement a denial of those rumors?
