nike_magIt is 2015 and unfortunately there are several things from Back to the Future that have yet to be made a reality, like actual hoverboards that work everywhere, and self-lacing Nike shoes. However if you might recall, in 2014 Nike’s shoe designer promised that we would see such shoes in 2015. Turns out he was partially right.

Nike has confirmed that the shoes are now a reality, albeit in a very limited form. The very lucky person who gets to wear them is none other than Michael J. Fox who plays the character Marty McFly from the movie. It has been speculated that Fox will be showing off his new shoes at Jimmy Kimmel where he is scheduled to appear later tonight.

In an image posted by Fox on Twitter, it shows a letter written to Fox from Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s shoe designer in which Hatfield wrote, “Although the project started as science fiction, we’re now proud to turn that fiction into fact.” So like we said, Hatfield was right about the shoes arriving in 2015, but as to general availability, he stated that more pairs will be released in 2016.

However as noted by Nike, the shoes will be a limited release and will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Details of the auction will be revealed in spring 2016, so best to start saving if you are planning on bidding on it.
