kazoku-mesen-1[CEATEC 2015] It isn’t all about ping pong robots when it comes to Omron, you know – there is much more than meets the eye; and the eye is exactly what we’re looking at this time around with the new network camera from Omron which is known as the Kazoku Mesen. The Kazoku Mesen happens to be a wireless LAN-compatible network camera that will also include face recognition functionality as part of the mix, now how about that?

This is made possible thanks to Okao Vision, which happens to be their very own software-based image recognition engine. This particular software is able to keep tabs on a baby in his or her cot, or a pet in a room – and you can do so remotely via your smartphone or over the Internet on a desktop or notebook somewhere. The camera’s resolution ain’t too shabby really, as it arrives in 1,280 x 720 resolution, allowing it to capture images of the room with an angle of view of 100°. You are able to set it up on a wall or on a special mount, and have it work alongside a smartphone app.

Accessing the camera’s feed can be done through Omron’s cloud-based authentication server, where upon authentication, all data will be directly exchanged between the camera and the smartphone app – hence, not a single camera shot is sent to the server, which ensures a greater degree of privacy. There will also be an infrared LED lamp that allows the camera to shoot in the dark. It is right now in the Japanese market with an asking price of ¥29,800 a pop.

As for the kind of detection levels it is capable of, it can more or less figure out 13 various items – in particular, a face, detect a face, hand, human body, pet, moving object and voice and estimate a gender, age, facial expression, facial orientation, eye line and closed eye.
