sharp-transparent-display-3[CEATEC 2015] It is all about convergence these days, isn’t it? We have more or less consolidated our GPS navigation device, portable media player, phone, digital organizer and notepad into a single device – that which is known far and wide as the smartphone. Well, when it comes to the retail industry, things are pretty much separated by their function. For instance, a glass display is just that – a glass display, and store executives loathe those who love to leave their fingerprints all over a particular display while they ogle at the item encased behind it. How about turning things around by making sure that the display itself has the added advantage of being able to show additional information, sans the need for placards or tags? Sharp has called this development the transparent display, for obvious reasons.

The Sharp transparent display do not seem as though they are able to be too large in size, but one thing is for sure – it can completely block out whatever you would like to see behind the display, which means if such technology were to be advanced enough, it might even end up as some sort of camouflage blanket, especially if the bezels are thin enough. Having said that, it remains to be seen whether such transparent displays are able to make it big in the retail world, as surely there is a rather large initial outlay involved.

On the other hand, in the event of a power outage, it looks just like any other ordinary transparent glass display case. Neat, yes?
