powerwallTesla is a company known for making electric cars, although recently we’ve seen the company start to expand their efforts and bring their technology into the home with devices like the Powerwall, a huge battery which can basically can store energy either from the sun or from the grid, thus allowing you to use the energy when necessary.

Now it looks like Tesla’s technology will be used to help keep the lights on in offices in the state of California. Announced by real estate developers The Irvine Company and Advanced Microgrid Solutions, both companies have revealed their plans to use Tesla’s batteries to build large battery farms in Irvine, California.

The plan is to use these batteries to help power offices in the area, and thanks to Advanced Microgrid Solutions’ software, they will be able to alternate between battery power and power from the grid. For example when it detects that demand for power from the grid is too high, they will switch to battery, thus relieving some of the stress on the grid during peak times.

The goal is to install 10 megawatts of batteries in Irvine alone in 2016, which according to estimations is enough energy to power about 10,000 homes. The idea is also to reduce the amount of new power plants that need to be built to handle peak power demands.
