3d touchEver since Apple launched their new iPhones with 3D Touch, the internet has been awash in rumors that other OEMs are expected to follow suit. The rumors claim that Samsung’s 2016 Galaxy S7 handsets could feature pressure-sensitive displays, and now a rumor out of China has suggested that Xiaomi could be interested as well.

The rumors claim that Xiaomi has patented technology that in concept is similar to Apple’s 3D Touch, hinting that the company has at the very least explored the idea. Whether or not it will translate into an actual smartphone feature is anyone’s guess. However as pointed out by G for Games, Xiaomi has worked with Synaptics in the past.

For those unfamiliar, Synaptics is a company who has recently announced display controllers that will give smartphone displays pressure-sensitive screens. The company stated that mass production of these controllers are underway, so chances are it will only be in 2016 that we will see them being adopted.

However like we said, Xiaomi and Synaptics have worked together in the past, so it has been speculated that the company could turn to Synaptics for the pressure-sensitive displays as an alternative to making their own. Either way it’s best taken with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Will pressure-sensitive displays become commonplace like fingerprint sensors?
