amazon-sign

You might remember that back in 2013 many Amazon customers did not receive their packages in time for Christmas and that wasn’t nice since most people had purchased gifts that were meant to be given out during the holiday. Amazon explained back then that the delay had nothing to do with it rather the shipping partners like UPS were to blame, still it apologized to customers and reimbursed some with gift cards worth $20. If a new report is believed the company may have taken drastic steps to ensure that it doesn’t have to go through something like that ever again.

Amazon is rumored to be running its latest venture under the codename Aerosmith, apt because it’s said to concern cargo planes. Motherboard reports that a secretive air freight business is being run out of an old DHL facility in Wilmington and multiple signs point towards Amazon.

DHL used the Wilmington Air Park in Ohio until 2008 before it packed up and left, cutting thousands of jobs and leaving behind vast warehouses and two runways. In September this year a new air cargo operating was launched from this site by an aviation holding company named Air Transport Services Group. It’s operating four flights daily to four airports: Allentown, PA, Ontario, CA, Tampa and Oakland, using leased Boeing 767s. It’s interesting to note that all of these four airports have Amazon distribution warehouses within 60 miles.

The detailed report cites multiple sources including airport staff and industry experts that all believe that it’s actually Amazon that’s behind this venture, the company itself has not yet confirmed if this report is true or not. It wouldn’t be surprising if it is because Amazon heavily relies on shipping partners to ensure that packages are timely delivered, and if it can run its own venture on the side to limit the chances of delays then it would all make perfect sense.

Some have even claimed that Amazon plans to eventually replace shipping companies with its own service, handling everything from packaging items to delivering them to customers by itself. Perhaps this just might signal what’s to come from Amazon in the future.
