According to a new report Apple has placed orders for four million units of the Apple Watch as it anticipates a surge in demand over the coming holiday shopping season, the Apple Watch is predicted as a trending item this season, so it does make sense for Apple to make sure that there are ample units on hand to sell. It’s also said that Apple is now seeking a second manufacturer for its first smartwatch.

The report claims that Apple is in talks with Wistron, Inventec and Foxconn to get another manufacturer onboard aside from Quanta Computer. Having multiple suppliers will reduce the risk of finding itself in a demand supply gap if the only manufacturer runs into any kind of issue during mass production. That’s not something that Apple can afford.

This will also help Apple to improve supplies when it inevitably launches the second generation Apple Watch. When its first smartwatch was launched earlier this year supplies were constrained and it was only in the recent past that the gap was bridged, with Apple now even providing units to third-party retailers to expand sales of its smartwatch.

Rumor has it that the second generation Apple Watch could arrive by mid-2016. Since Apple doesn’t comment on upcoming products the company has dropped zero hints about the Apple Watch 2, the only thing that can be said with certainty is that the new smartwatch won’t be out until next year.
