chrome_iosEver since Apple announced iOS 8, we have started to see many third-party keyboards make their way into the iTunes App Store, something that Android users have been enjoying for many years now. Unfortunately it seems that due to the various bugs found in the keyboard and how they can affect apps, Google has blocked them from use on Chrome.

Following an update Google released a couple of days ago that enabled 3D Touch support, Google released an update yesterday that addressed a bug. “Resolved an issue with Omnibox queries failing to display properly”. The update also disabled third-party keyboards from use within the Chrome app.

According to Google, they claim that, “Third-party keyboards have been disabled due to crashes caused by a bug in iOS 9.” What this means is that if you do rely on third-party keyboards, don’t expect to be able to use it in Chrome. Instead you will be greeted by iOS’ default keyboard. If you’re not the type to bother with third-party keyboards then we guess this shouldn’t really be an issue for you.

That being said given that this problem seems to have to do with iOS 9, there’s no telling when Chrome for iOS will support third-party keyboards again as the onus to fix the problem is entirely on Apple. So until then, we guess users will just have to get used to not using third-party keyboards for Chrome on their iOS devices. Alternatively you could just hold off on updating Chrome, but you could run into the crashes that Google is talking about.
