From time to time, we see eBay listings for really old video game consoles, but here’s something you don’t hear everyday. According to one gamer from Japan, he claims to have left his Super Famicom (also known as the Super Nintendo in other markets) on for the past 20 years, simply because he doesn’t want his saved game to be erased.

According to the gamer, he has a game of Umihara Kawase saved on his console. He claims that if he turns it off, he is worried that his saved game would disappear. According to his translated tweet, “Incidentally, I’m pretty sure my first generation Umihara Kawase, which has been on in the SNES for over 20 years, has been in operation for over 180,000 hours. If the power is turned off, I’ll lose all my replay data. Probably.”

So why leave it on, you ask? Basically back in the day, game cartridges came with SDRAM that saved game progress. However the RAM is kept “alive” with a coin-sized battery, and apparently everytime the console is turned off, the battery is one step closer to dying, which is why the gamer felt the need to keep his console on for the past 20 years.

We have to admit we are a bit skeptical since it’s hard to believe that in the past 20 years there has never been a power outage. We are also more curious as to why he wants to keep his saved progress alive after all these years, but boy, talk about dedication!
